What to Expect at Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment
Check-in and provider review
You arrive with the area shaved within the last day and free of lotion, deodorant, or makeup (the full prep list is on before your first session). Check-in is brief. Before any treatment, your provider reviews your chart: your skin's response at the last session, any changes in medications or sun exposure since, and where you are in your series. This review is short, but it is the step that keeps your plan consistent from visit to visit, and it is where you should mention anything new, from a beach weekend to a new prescription.
In the treatment room
You will be positioned comfortably with the area exposed, and everyone in the room puts on wavelength-rated eye protection, you included. This is standard laser safety, not ceremony, and a practice that skips it is telling you something. Depending on the area and settings, your provider may apply a clear gel that helps the handpiece glide and keeps the skin surface cool.
The treatment itself is methodical rather than dramatic. Your provider works the handpiece across the area in overlapping passes, one pulse at a time, following a grid so no strip is missed and none is double-treated. Each pulse lands as a quick snap with a burst of cooling from the device at the same moment. You can talk during it, ask questions, and say so if a pulse felt too hot, which is useful information for the settings rather than a complaint. What the pulses feel like, area by area, is covered honestly on does it hurt.
How long a session takes
Session length is mostly a function of surface area. From how these appointments actually book here:
- Underarms: 15 minutes or less.
- Legs: 30 to 60 minutes depending on coverage.
- Bikini and Brazilian: 15 to 30 minutes.
- Face and Upper Lip: 15 minutes or less.
- Back and Chest: 30 to 45 minutes.
- Full Body: Varies; planned at your consultation.
Add a few minutes on either side for the provider review and checkout. An underarm session fits inside a lunch break with time to spare. Full legs are best planned as a real appointment.
Right after your session
The treated skin is typically pink and mildly warm for a few hours, sometimes with slight puffiness around the follicles. This looks and feels like brief, mild sun exposure and settles on its own, usually the same day. A cool compress helps if the warmth lingers. You can return to your normal day immediately, with a short list of exceptions for the first day or two: hot tubs, saunas, hard workouts, and direct sun. The full list, and when to call us, is on the aftercare page.
The shedding phase: the part nobody warns you about
One to three weeks after your session, the treated hairs begin to shed. Hairs that look like they are growing push up through the skin and then fall away, on their own or with gentle washing. If nobody has explained this, it is alarming: it looks exactly like regrowth, and patients who were not warned sometimes conclude the treatment failed right as it is visibly working. So, plainly: hairs falling out in the weeks after a session are disabled hairs being expelled by the follicle. That is the treatment succeeding, not failing. What grows back later, on the normal cycle, are the hairs that were in a resting phase on treatment day, which is exactly why the series has more than one session.
Booking the next session
Before you leave, your next session goes on the calendar at the spacing your plan calls for, typically 4 to 8 weeks depending on the area, since facial hair cycles faster than body hair. The spacing is the treatment doing its job, catching the next group of hairs as they enter their responsive phase, so keeping the cadence matters more than squeezing sessions closer together. You will always know which session you are on and how many remain. That is a low bar, and an unmet one at enough practices that we state it explicitly.
